Great West Life Benefits

Thankful Thursday V.12

I haven’t done one of these in a while because there hasn’t been much to write about that I’m thankful for. Kind of sad, in a way. I guess.

I’m still dealing with the Great West Life Disaster. I’ve receiving no phone call this week. Shocking! I was hoping that Natalie (the lady I spoke with in the most recent call) would impress me and call me with some good news, but that has not happened yet. Maybe tomorrow it will; and since I won’t be around in the evening to take the call it won’t really make that much of a difference. I guess I will deal with it on Monday evening by calling them myself.

Why won’t I be around? Well I’m spending Friday evening and the better part of Saturday at Cassie’s. We are hitting up Shoppers Drug Mart for their Bonus Redemption . Needless to say it should be an interesting weekend.

Great West Life Disaster Part 3

If you have been following my Great West Life Disaster then you know what’s been going on and this post will be somewhat of an update to the ongoing battle. If you have no idea what’s going on, well you can read up on it here and here. Then this post will all make sense.

I mentioned in the last post that I would be calling Great West Life on Friday evening because I failed to hear from them Wednesday evening. I assumed that if they called me Thursday evening I would not be around to take the call due to picking up the cheque from the provider, so you can imagine how surprised I was when Joelle; the Wednesday rep from the London Office called me Thursday morning while I was on my way out the door for work. I ended up taking the phone call which made me late for work. Basically all she could tell me was that the adjuster should be calling me within 24/48 hours. So Monday or Tuesday at the latest since no one works during the weekend. I informed them that I was very displeased with having rearranged my Wednesday schedule to be home in order to take a phone call that never came. She made no attempts to apologize. I then thanked her for calling me and ended the call.

I decided to wait until 5:30 PM to call Great West Life friday evening in case by some miracle they decided to contact me first. When I called I made sure to have all of my paperwork laid out over my bed so that I was ready to basically explain my case yet again.

I ended up getting very lucky this time because Natalie; the London Office rep that I spoke to was unbelievable nice and understanding. She explained everything back to me so that I could confirm that she understood the whole situation. She also gave me her personal extension and said that she would look into it to make sure that I got an answer as to what was going on regarding why I was approved for $750 and why now it’s being changed to $500. She also apologized for the way everything has been handled up to now and assured me that she would call me by Wednesday the latest with either an answer or to inform me that things were still being looked into. I thanked her about a hundred times and she told me to have an enjoyable weekend.

So that’s where that stands, since I’ve yet to hear anything back.

The other issue I am now dealing with is trying to figure out why nothing was taking off my pay cheque for my benefits. Since my pay is direct deposited I wondered why it had increased $10. Usually about $10 comes off each pay and once I checked my pay stub I noticed that nothing came off my most recent pay (Thursday March 31st) for my benefits. I put a call into the payroll department but that was at 4:00 pm on Friday and I didn’t expect a call back since the office closes at 5:00 pm. So I’m not trying to figure out if Great West Life has suspended my Benefits.

And this all could not come at a more horrible time because I have a dentist appointment Tuesday Evening.

Great West Life Disaster Continues

Oh Great West Life, it is now 6:00 pm which means your office has how closed. Why the hell did I not receive a phone call? I remember being told on Monday when I called that I would be receiving a phone call Wednesday. You even asked me the best time to call and I told you. I totally rearranged my schedule for you to call because you said you would be calling and you never did. This is only adding fuel to the fire.

Tomorrow I am picking up the cheque that was sent to my orthopedic service provider because they received it today and you can bet that it will never ever be cashed. Since I won’t be around to accept a phone call from Great West Life I’ll have to deal with this all on Friday evening. I’m sooo annoyed.

Great West Life Benefits Disaster

Back in December I submitted a claim for orthopedic shoes since my benefit plan Great West Life allows for that. There was a bunch of paper work that had to go back and forth in order for me to get my first pair. Paper work that included a doctors note and then an assessment claim that was submitted to Great West Life in order to see if the amount would be covered. I received a letter back stating that I would be covered for the full $750.00. So on Dec 13th 2010 I had my appointment, and the paperwork was sent off. On Jan 7th 2011 I received payment from Great West Life via direct deposit for the full $750.00, I then paid the provider of the orthopedic shoes on Jan 13th 2011 the full $750.00.

Since I’m eligible every calendar year I decided that I would order a second pair to wear while I’m indoor at home. On Feb 10th 2011 I had an appointment with the same provider and the paper work was sent off for my second paid of orthopedic shoes. On March 7th 2011 I received via direct deposit $500.00. I decided to call and inquire as to why the full $750.00 amount was not eligible and I was told that “Benefits are limited to representative pricing in the area” which basically means that I’m not covered for $750.00 but for $500.00. I received a phone call informing me that because the second paid was not made from custom imprints of my feet but from recycled prints I was not eligible for the full amount. So I called the provider of the orthopedic shoes and informed them of this, they were amazing an adjusted the amount to $500.00 so on March 8th 2011 I paid the provider $500.00.

Yesterday; March 28th 2011 I received a letter from Great West Life regarding my Dec 13th 2010 claim. The letter states that my submitted expense is $750.00 however my eligible expense is $500.00 due to “Benefits are limited to representative pricing in the area” and that a cheque for $500.00 is being sent to the provider of the orthopedic shoes.
This confused me, since I already received the $750.00 and paid the claim with the money that I received, so I called Great West Life and asked what was going on. Basically no one could tell me anything because the person that dealt with my first inquire into why the amounts approved were different was not there. I was told that I would receive an answer by Wednesday evening.

This evening I opened up another letter from Great West Life. It states the following.

On Jan 6th 2011, a $750.00 health claim overpayment was made.
Our file shoes that the claim has an assignment of benefits to the provider of services. Inadvertently, the cheque was issued in your name. We apologize for an inconvenience this may have caused.

It would be appreciated if you could send us a cheque, payment to Great West Life, in the amount of $750.00, to settle the full amount of the overpayment by April 21st 2011.

Basically, Great West Life want’s me to pay them back because they fucked up, approved a claim for $750.00, then paid me the full $750.00 when in fact that claim should have been approved for $500.00 and been paid to the service provider.

The $750.00 and the $500.00 that I received for both claims from Great West Life was paid to the service provider by me, so by them issuing a cheque to the service provider now is pretty redundant, and it’s insulting for them to ask for the money back from me.

I’m hoping that tomorrow when I explain all this Great West Life realizes that I will not be sending them a cheque for $750.00 and that the cheque that they have issued and sent to the service provider for $500.00 should have a stop payment placed on it. Everyone’s already been paid!
It’s not my fault if I was approved for an amount that I should not have been approved for. That’s their error. Why should I be penalized.

What do you think? Am I in the wrong here? Do I make sense? Should I have to pay back the $750.00?
